Unlock Your Child's Full Swimming Potential in a Safe and Fun Environment
Our Mission
At Little Otter Swim School, we are dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing, and empowering aquatic experience for swimmers from 6 months through adulthood—including individuals with trauma, fear of water, or special needs. Our approach is grounded in empathy, compassion, and evidence-based child development practices, ensuring each swimmer feels supported, respected, and encouraged.
We follow a teacher-led, child-centered philosophy that prioritizes emotional security, sensory integration, and trust-building before technical skill development. Participation is never forced. Instead, we create a positive, pressure-free environment where learners can safely explore, grow, and thrive at their own pace.
A Unique Approach to Swim Education
Our program goes beyond traditional lessons by blending:
- Advanced Scuba diving expertise
- Advanced aquatic safety training
- Early childhood education / development
This unique combination supports the development of motor skills, speech-language abilities, and water confidence, while reinforcing emotional safety and whole-body learning.
Our structured curriculum progresses through three color-coded levels:
- Green – Beginner: Foundational comfort and safety in water
- Yellow – Intermediate: Skill-building, control, and confidence
- Blue – Advanced: Stroke refinement, endurance, and independence
Each level is tailored to the swimmer’s developmental readiness and emotional comfort, allowing them to grow confidently through every stage.
Compassionate, Trauma-Informed Instruction
Our instructors are trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and trained to work with children and adults experiencing anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or past negative water experiences. We focus on:
- Building trust and emotional connection first
- Creating individualized, joyful learning experiences
- Respecting each swimmer’s pace and boundaries
This approach helps students not only progress technically but also build emotional resilience, body awareness, and lifelong water safety skills.
Why It Matters
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1–4. Among children ages 5–14, drowning remains a top 3 cause of unintentional injury-related death. For adults, approximately 1 in 5 Americans report a fear of deep water, and nearly 38% of adults cannot swim well enough to save themselves in an emergency.
These alarming statistics reflect a widespread gap in access to safe, emotionally supportive swim education. That’s why our school offers private, one-on-one lessons—a model proven to:
- Accelerate skill acquisition by up to 60% compared to group classes
- Increase emotional safety and trust, especially for fearful or sensitive learners
- Allow instructors to customize techniques based on each individual’s developmental and emotional needs
- Strengthen the instructor-student bond, which research shows is crucial for overcoming water anxiety
Our private, distraction-free settings support:
- Focused, personalized attention
- Secure attachments between child and instructor
- Consistent, meaningful progress
We believe that connection—not pressure—is what creates confident swimmers.
Where Trust Leads, and Water Follows
Through patient guidance, personalized pacing, and a deep commitment to emotional well-being, we help students not only learn to swim—but to trust the water, their instructor, and themselves.
Because every otter learns best when they feel safe, supported, and free to have fun.
Ready to make waves? Join us at Little Otter Swim School—where safety meets joy, and confidence is born one splash at a time.

Swim Timeline by Age Group
At Little Otter Swim School, we believe in meeting each child where they are—developmentally and emotionally. While every child is unique, here is a general guide to help parents set healthy expectations for learning to float and swim.
6–18 Months (Infant)
- Goal: Comfort in water, parent/instructor child bonding, basic breath control, assisted back floating
- Timeline: 3–6 months for comfort; floating not yet independent
- Factors: Infants don’t learn to swim independently at this stage, but early exposure reduces fear and lays a sensory foundation.
18 Months–3 Years (Toddler)
- Goal: Assisted floating, basic movement, breath control, introduction to water safety
- Timeline: 6–12 months for independent back float (with consistent lessons 2-3x/week)
- Notes: Progress is often slow and dependent on trust, listening, and comfort. Fear or separation anxiety can temporarily slow development.
3–4 Years (Preschool)
- Goal: Independent floating, basic propulsion, kicking and paddling, underwater confidence
- Timeline: 6–18 months for independent swim-float-swim sequence
- Important Factors: At this stage, emotional readiness, attention span, and listening skills greatly impact consistency. Children still benefit from play-based, sensory-rich learning.
5–7 Years (Early School Age)
- Goal: Independent back and front floating, basic freestyle, water safety skills
- Timeline: 6–12 months to swim short distances confidently
- Notes: Most children in this range can learn to float and swim 10–15 feet independently within a year with regular private instruction. Children who are fearful may take longer, while highly motivated or athletic children may progress faster.
8–12 Years
- Goal: Stroke development (freestyle, backstroke), endurance, treading water
- Timeline: 3–9 months to swim 25 yards (pool length) comfortably
- Factors: Children in this age group typically learn quickly with regular weekly lessons, especially if they are emotionally secure and have no water trauma.
Teens & Adults (13+)
- Goal: Overcoming fear, stroke refinement, deep-water safety
- Timeline: 3–6 months with consistent weekly sessions for fearful learners; faster for confident beginners
- Notes: Fear of water is a major barrier for many adults, and emotional support is essential. One-on-one lessons in private settings dramatically accelerate confidence and technique.
What Affects Swim Progress?
No matter the age, the following factors influence how quickly a swimmer progresses:
- Age and physical development
- Listening skills and focus
- Comfort with water / sensory sensitivity
- Previous experiences (positive or traumatic)
- Consistency of lessons (2-3 times per week recommended)
- Parental support and reinforcement outside of lessons
- Temperament and emotional regulation skills
Our Philosophy
At Little Otter Swim School, we avoid “one-size-fits-all” timelines. Instead, we nurture each swimmer through trust, patience, and joy-filled challenge—allowing their unique abilities and emotions to guide the process. It’s not a race—it’s a relationship.
Got any Questions for us?
What are the benefits of private 1-on-1 instruction?
Private lessons enable your child to be taught at their own specific individual pace. All lessons are catered to your child’s needs and learning style.
How many instructors do you have?
Little Otters Swim School School currently has 1 instructor, but that will increase to 2 instructors starting during summer. For the 2025 season the instructor will be Christina Gabrielle Roy.
How many lessons per week are suggested?
We recommend your child swims a minimum of 2 - 3 lessons per week to really expediate the swim needs of your child.
What does my child need to bring to class?
Your child will need to bring a bathing suit and towel. All else will be supplied.
Do I need to be prepared to get in the water with my child?
If your child has an extreme fear of the water I ask that you bring your bathing suit and be prepared to get in and assist until your child becomes comfortable entering the water with just me.
What if my child cries and is scared during the lesson?
All Lessons are catered to the child and parents needs/ wants. I can work your child into the pool at the pace that is most comfortable for you and your child. I am very experienced working with fearful children.
How long does it take for my child to learn how to swim?
Every child will learn at their own pace depending on their comfortability with water and age that they start swimming. We encourage children to take swim lessons until they have built up their stroke technique. Some decide to leave before learning their strokes. Regardless of the end goal, every child learns at his or her own pace which can be a few months to a few years depending on age.
Is the pool heated?
Yes, the pool is heated 90 degrees to ensure your child is comfortable in the water and is fully enclosed during winter and into spring.
What age is ideal to start swim lessons?
We start swimming lessons at 6 months of age and sometimes younger. It is never too late to learn how to swim.
